Around San Francisco and the Silicon Valley, discussing the perks that different tech companies offer their employees is a hot dinner topic. Dropbox will fly your family to SF for a weekend! Facebook has an on-site doctor and dentist! Google lets them take their commuter buses to Napa on the weekends! Uber employees get hundreds of dollars towards free rides!
All of that is well and good, but what I really care about is the food perks. Most major tech companies in the Bay Area have legendary cafeteria situations, and I’m on a mission to eat at all of them. My first stop on this bucket list tour was Facebook.
Facebook’s campus near in Menlo Park is pretty much like Disneyland, without the rides. You pull up to something that looks like a university from the outside, with everyone wearing backpacks and riding bikes around. Inside the campus, it looks like a recreated town - with sidewalks, streets, benches, parks, arcades, and restaurants. And everything is FREE.
Just a note - you do have to be invited by an employee to enter the campus. I have two great girlfriends who work there and I was so happy to tag along for a lunch!
My friend and I walked around the campus, and I was just in awe. We stopped at “Harvest” for lunch, which was Facebook’s version of a trendy salad spot. I was overwhelmed with options so I went with greens and a spicy chicken salad.
The burger joint looked tempting..
As did the BBQ pits…
So did “Teddy’s” for Mexican food…
Instead of running to the local Starbucks for a coffee break, Facebook employees can go to the local sweet shop for ice cream and goodies. I sampled some of the soy mint chip ice cream.
If snack attacks (somehow) arrive, each office space is stocked with everything from kale chips to Quest bars to cereal to nuts to cookies. You definitely can be as healthy or unhealthy as you want at Facebook!
If none of the above suit your fancy, there’s a noodle spot, a pizza joint, another cafeteria whose menu changes every day, Indian food, you name it. There didn’t seem to be a straight up vegan/vegetarian spot, but I’m sure you can find options no matter which place you go to.
Overall, I give Facebook’s food situation a solid “A”. What doesn’t give it a straight up “A+” was there was no kombucha - I hear Twitter serves up kombucha on tap! Taking notes, Facebook chefs?

So cool that you got to visit the Facebook campus! I’d love to get there one day. And OMG I can’t believe all of those options!! Were the prices also subsidized? My bestie’s husband worked at a large Tech firm who had a 5 star chef on campus, and all of the food was subsidized, so he could get what would be a gourmet $35 salmon dinner at work for a whopping $2.50!!! Insane!

The price is - FREE. i think there is one place where you have to pay for food, but all of the places I showed above were 100% no payment necessary.
How cool that they have KALE CHIPS! It doesn’t get much better than that.

I think they also had plantain chips…which I know you’d love
Oh my gosh, I can’t believe employees can eat there for free. I swear, tech companies are a whole different world.

Love! Bummed I missed you, but glad you got to try out all the delicious foods! Harvest is a fave for sure!
I would eat at Harvest every day if I worked at FB.
Wow, how awesome that you got to go there! That is a fantastic idea to have a doctor and dentist on site. I love it when companies do stuff like that for their employees

They even have a bike repair shop. The perks are endless!
I can’t believe the start-up world! It would really make for a great reality show- getting a look at life there. Someone I know works at Square and I love her instagrams from work (as creepy as that sounds!)

I’ll have to add Square to my eatery list!

You aren’t kidding Dani, it totally looks like Disneyland. I think I need to work here. Too bad SF is too cold for this Arizona girl!

Wow, all of these places sound like they have the coolest work environments! I LOVE the idea of everyone riding bikes around and carrying backpacks (although that may just be because I’m in college and never want to graduate… 😉 )
And the free delicious restaurants and snacks- such awesome perks!
