Ahoy, friends! I had a post ready to go last Sunday which would have explained my hiatus from the blogosphere last week, but alas, it did not go live and I was sailing somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic on the way to the Bahamas, my computer nowhere in sight to hit “publish”. My bad….
So, to recap, last week Nate and I roadtripped down from Virginia to Florida (overnight stops in Raleigh and Boca Raton) to set sail on a 44-foot catamaran for a week long trip from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas with twelve friends. The roadtrip itself was a blast, and Nate and I took turns zooming the Prius down the interstate and eating trail mix. I was a bit nervous about the sailing trip - I had never done one before, I had never spent more than a couple of hours on a boat of that size, and I had never really done any open ocean boating. I came prepared with a seasickness patch and a lot of butterflies. But I had no reason to be nervous! To summarize, it was the best use of paid vacation that I have EVER used. I loved every minute of the trip, from the overnight crossing with some serious rough waves, to anchoring on deserted islands where we were the only folks in sight, to daily mimosa drinking, to making new friends, to above all, the SAILING. Everyone on the boat chipped in somehow, from actually doing the sailing itself to cooking to cleaning. It was especially fun for me to get to see Nate lead the crew :). It was not your typical spring break trip, and I can’t wait for next year. I definitely still felt the swaying from the boat for over 24 hours after we docked back in the USA (maybe the beeline for margaritas didn’t help).
Check out scenes from the trip below! We sailed from Fort Lauderdale to the Bimini Islands, and then sailed around the Bimini Islands for the rest of the trip.
