Want sangria RIGHT NOW?! This recipe calls for only four ingredients to DIY sangria!
I prefer my sangria ratio of fruit to wine to be a solid 5:1. Let’s just call it what it is - a meal. I mean, it’s almost healthy right? There are few better ways to drink alcohol than by EATING it through crunchy pieces of apple and tangy pieces of citrus that have been soaking up juicy red wine. Mmmmm. Some sangrias are too sweet, and leave you with a brutal hangover. Some aren’t alcoholic enough. When I first put together this sangria recipe, I was worried that leaving out brandy or orange liquor was going to be a real make or break it but I’m very glad to share with you that everyone loved this sangria! My parents liked that it retained a real wine-y flavor and you really could enjoy it as a beverage throughout your meal, not just as a dessert.
Although Nate did spike his with tequila. Well, you can’t win ’em all! As I was doing sangria research ahead of time, one thing that I read that was consistent across all recipes (whether they used liquor or sugar or white wine or soda or juice) was that sangria needs time to sit. It needs to marinate in its own goodness before serving. If you don’t give the sangria time for the fruit to flavor the wine and for the wine to flavor the fruit, it will taste…not very complex, and like it needs stirring up. Trust me. And don’t put ice in it - it waters it down!
So several hours before your dinner party, or your solo time with this sangria, cut up the fruit, mix in the sugar, and let it sit. Put it in your fridge and just try your best to forget about it for a while. Try your best - I know it’s tough. When you’re ready to serve, ladle in large glasses with lots of fruit. If you’re like me, pair your glass with a fork because, in my opinion, sangria is more of a vessel for spiked fruit than anything else. I mean…it’s like having a fruit cup, right?
