Hello from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania! I flew to DC on Monday and grabbed a quick dinner with my previous roommate, Paige, at her GREAT new apartment in Adams Morgan. She made a delicious zoodles dish using this recipe from Pinch of Yum, and then I drove on up to Pennsylvania’s capitol city! Linking up with Jenn to show Tuesday’s eats.
As much as I love my work travel routines in the Pacific Northwest (read: salmon all day err day) it’s been fun to check out some new places out here. The last time I was in Harrisburg for work I was SO incredibly jetlagged from our trip to Shanghai and Hong Kong that I actually blacked it all out and don’t remember a thing. So I’m so glad to be fully functioning and aware this time around!
BREAKFAST
The one thing I do remember about our last time in Harrisburg was how much coffee I attempted to consume to (unsuccessfully) power me through the jetlag. I specifically remember ordering two coffees from this place so I could save “one for later”. Anyways, today I only needed one drip coffee to start the day from Little Amps - a super cute coffee shop across the street from the capitol building.
Of course my first google search was “healthy grocery store” which brought us to The Healthy Grocer. What a find! I stocked up on good stuff to make for lunch for the week and picked up a Funky Monkey smoothie. Classic blend of baby kale, almond milk, PB, and protein powder.
LUNCH
I made a great office lunch using Ezekial sprouted grain wraps, tuna salad from The Healthy Grocer, and a handful of baby spinach/kale. Some of Wildbrine’s Curry Cauliflower sauerkraut on the side.
SNACK
For a 4pm snack, I ate this pink lady apple and lots of hot green tea. It may be hot outside…but they sure keep these buildings wayyy too air conditioned.
Before dinner, I went for a “training” run around Harrisburg. Yup, yesterday me, Nate, and some of our friends signed up to run the Angel Island 12K. I figured I should actually try and get 5-6 miles in this week just to make sure I could do this run. Supposedly it’s a very hilly course! Anyways, I clocked in six miles in on-and-off pouring rain. In a white t-shirt. And a neon sports bra. Great combo when you’re drenched.
To celebrate my lovely teammate’s birthday, we went to Cork & Fork just down the road from our hotel. I enjoyed this tasty avocado salad, and as my entree I ordered one of the small plates that had kale, cannellini beans and sausage. It was good! Although my sausage was a bit on the fatty side and could have used some more spice. We also shared a big thing of roasted brussels sprouts.
And now I’m writing this to you, before I hunker down to do some more “real” work!

you have such good control when you’re traveling! i travel all the time for work too and can NEVER hunker down like i need to. half the time we’re in little baby towns and the hotels are like “um no we don’t have a fridge in your room?” and then i give up. i need to start being a little more resourceful i think 😉

If the hotel doesn’t have a fridge in your room, you can always ask the room service fridge to use theirs and store food!
You can’t beat a good kale smoothie. That avocado salad would go down well now - I’m so hungry.

Haha! Nothing worse than reading food blogs when you’re hungry.
My LEAST favorite part about working in an office was how cold it ALWAYS WAS. The worst!! Your dinner looks SO good. That salad!

I always bring a jacket - even in the summer!
Why do places think that it’s acceptable to turn the air down to sub-Arctic temps just because it’s hot outside? I keep my space heater running in my office all day because of this - even when it’s 100 degrees outside!

I wish I had one of those!! Once I brought a towel from the hotel into my client site to wrap around my legs underneath my desk.
Anything made with Ezekiel Wraps is an automatic winner! Great job on the healthy eats on the road!

Pet peeve = bringing a sweater to the office when it’s 100 degrees outside. But I do love tuna salad- good choice!

Same! I’ve been so cold all day!
The Healthy Grocery sounds like an amazing place! And it looks like you got to eat some great food along your travels. My office is always way too cold- I have been living in sweaters all summer!

The sauerkrauts from Trader Joe’s I’ve found to be pretty good! I love Farmhouse Culture and OlyKraut (a local brand in the Pacific northwest).
It’s always so much fun exploring food when traveling. I think that’s my favorite part
Looks like you found lots of delicious food in PA!
